The Lieutenant Governor Welcomes
His Highness the Aga Khan to Québec
On March 26, 2026, the Lieutenant Governor had the privilege of welcoming His Highness the Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Nizari Muslims, at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport. Joining her were Mr. Claude Guay, Parliamentary Secretary to the federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, as well as a delegation of leaders from Québec's Ismaili community.
This visit to Québec is part of His Highness's first official visit to Canada since his accession on February 4, 2025, to the position of 50th hereditary Imam, succeeding his father, Prince Karim Aga Khan IV.
Who is His Highness the Aga Khan?
His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V was born on October 12, 1971, in Geneva. The eldest son of the late Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, he represents a spiritual lineage tracing back to the Prophet Muhammad. On February 4, 2025, he became the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Nizari Muslims, assuming both spiritual authority over his community and the presidency of the Aga Khan Development Network, active in dozens of countries around the world.
His Highness grew up in Geneva and holds personal ties to Québec, having completed part of his studies in Montréal. During our meeting, he spoke warmly of his attachment to the city.
A Community Rooted in Québec
The visit of His Highness also speaks to the vibrant presence of the Ismaili community in Québec. With 12 to 15 million members spread across more than twenty-five countries, the community is represented in Québec notably by families of Afghan origin whose integration, both in Montréal and Sherbrooke, reflects a deep attachment to their adopted home.
