Discours d’ouverture
de la 2e session de la 43e législature du Québec
A First Speech from the Throne Marked by Reconciliation
On September 30, 2025, fate saw to it that the very first Speech from the Throne delivered by Lieutenant Governor Manon Jeannotte coincided with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. A coincidence rich with meaning, befitting the historic milestone her appointment represents as the first Indigenous woman to hold this office in Québec.
Wearing a ribbon skirt — a traditional garment worn for more than three hundred years, now a symbol of resilience and reconciliation — and an orange sweater beaded pin around her neck, Ms. Jeannotte chose to embody fully, from this very first speech, the values that guide her mandate.
A Tribute to the Work of Elected Members
The Lieutenant Governor also took the opportunity to acknowledge the work accomplished by members of the Legislature during the first session.
In her words:
"Serving Québec is an immense privilege, but also a responsibility equal to that honour. Your presence here reflects the trust that citizens have placed in you to represent them and to act for the benefit of all Quebecers." »
She emphasized that democracy is a daily commitment, a collective endeavour nourished by dialogue and the pursuit of lasting solutions. In a world where disinformation sometimes undermines confidence in institutions, the responsibility of elected officials is all the greater: to encourage civic participation, to embody integrity, and to safeguard the strength of our democratic model.
Toward the next Seven Generations
The Lieutenant Governor concluded her address by inviting members of the Legislature to keep in mind the interests of the next seven generations — a First Nations value that calls for decisions to be made with a seven-generation horizon in mind. May the decisions of today, she said, shape a future that is just, sustainable, and full of promise.
A first speech rooted in memory, turned toward the future, and true to the vision of one who has chosen reconciliation, education, and the environment as the guiding values of her mandate.
